Developing the Skills and Knowledge for Effective Language Interpretation in Healthcare Settings
Are you bilingual and interested in interpreting in healthcare settings? The ULS 60-Hour Medical Interpreter Training Certificate Program is designed to provide you with the necessary skills, knowledge, and awareness to effectively interpret in medical settings. In this program, you will learn the three types of interpretation, with an emphasis on consecutive interpreting, the preferred modality in medical settings, especially in the remote setting. Additionally, you will learn basic knowledge of common medical conditions, treatments, and procedures, as well as communication skills, ethics, and standards.
Our trainer, Lisa Morris, is the Director of Cross-Cultural Initiatives for Commonwealth Medicine at UMASS Medical School. She has worked in the field of medical interpreting as an interpreter, interpreter manager, and educator of interpreters and healthcare staff for the last three decades at several healthcare institutions and colleges in New England. She has developed medical interpreter training and conferences, published and presented on the topic of language access nationally, and served on the board of the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare in various capacities.

In this program, you will learn the basic knowledge of common medical conditions, treatments, and procedures, bridging linguistic and cultural competency between clients and providers for specific communities necessary in the art of interpretation. You will also learn the three types of interpretation, with an emphasis on consecutive interpreting, the preferred modality in medical settings, especially in the remote setting. Additionally, you will learn communication skills, ethics, and standards, as well as the anatomy and physiology of body systems. The program is built on the National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training created by the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare.
The course will be available to take from February 26th – April 6th, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm, lasting for 3 hours each session. The class meets 2 nights a week with a maximum class size of 25 students. The cost of the program is $795.00.
